The setting for King Theoden's Throne Hall is in the Canterbury region in the center of the South Island. The rocky summit of Mount Sunday is only about 150 m above the wide plain, yet it offers a gigantic view. Mount Sunday. South Island. A small but striking summit in New Zealand's Southern Alps.

How to see Mount Doom in New Zealand? One DOES simply walk to Mordor. One DOES simply walk to Mordor. Hiking Tongariro Alpine Crossing is synonymous with 'MORDOR' since Peter Jackson's film interpretation of JRR Tolkien's fantasy novel 'The Lord of the Rings' used the volcanic landscape for its mythical backdrop.

To begin your journey up Mt. Doom you have to head to Tongariro National Park and seek out the Mangatepopo Car Park at the end of Mangatepopo Road. Climbing the peak is a detour on one of New Zealand's most popular day hikes, the Tongariro Crossing, where trampers traverse a patch of Mordor like terrain, winding past volcanic pools, geothermic vents and lava flows in New Zealand's oldest.

Mount Ngauruhoe, at 2287m, (Mount Doom in Lord of the RIngs) is one of three majestic, active volcanic mountains at Tongariro National Park, the oldest NP in New Zealand. Mount Ruapehu at 2797m and Mount Tongariro at 1967m are the other two. The three mountains are an impressive sight. Mount Tongariro was smoking when we visited.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a 19.4 km (12 mi) one-way hike. While it is just a part of a much longer circuit (the Tongariro Northern Circuit, a New Zealand Great Walk) which covers much more of the park, the Alpine Crossing affords views of all three volcanoes, four very colorful lakes, volcanic craters, and much more. All in just a day!

According to most guide books, just hiking the crossing should take 6-8 hours, not including a side-trip up Ngauruhoe, which starred in the Lord of the Rings trilogy as Mt. Doom, the hangout of bad guy Sauron. One look at it, and you'll understand why it filled the role so well.

We'd flown into Auckland to tackle the 43km, four-day Tongariro Northern Circuit, one of New Zealand's Great Walks. Situated almost smack-bang in the middle of the North Island, it's probably most famous as the setting for Peter Jackson's Mount Doom (Mt Ngauruhoe) in his Lord Of The Rings trilogy. Watching those films details the extent.

This track takes you to the summit of Mount Ngauruhoe (2291m) via Tongariro Alpine Crossing. It is an intense climb recommended for experienced and well-equipped trampers only. There are some switchbacks across the lower portion of the mountain, but those are only good for coming down, not up. Stick to the boulders and rock formations that will give the best ground to traverse both up and down.

Tongariro Northern Circuit is one of New Zealand's Great Walks. It is a 44.9km loop in the Northern half of Tongariro National Park, typically completed in 3-4 days. My initial intention was to complete the circuit in three days, but due to its popularity and limited spots (accommodation in huts/campsites), I only managed to book one campsite and did it in two strenuous days.

Mt Ngāuruhoe (pronounciation 'naa-ooroo-hway ') is located in New Zealand's Tongariro National Park. This active volcano played an iconic role as Mordor's Mount Doom in Peter Jackson's film adaptation of J.R.R Tolkien's classic fantasy novel The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. I've lived less than an hour's drive from Mt Ngāuruhoe.
